So, a hurricane might hit NYC on Sunday. Tuesday we got an earthquake, which was weird.

It might not happen, but I’m still a bit nervous about it. It will be my first hurricane, despite having grown up on the Gulf Coast of Texas. Been through tropical storms, but that’s baby stuff. (I’m blaming my parents for putting this fear in me. They keep calling and texting, telling me to prepare myself.)

I’ve mentioned my concern to some of my friends, but they, being the cool 20somethings they are who are over everything, have dismissed it. Naturally they will be the ones who will die in the storm. So, I’ve already mentally said goodbye to them.

Here is a song that is very appropriate for the occasion:

In other news, I watched “Overboard” last night for the millionth time. I grew up with this movie, but I haven’t seen it in over a few years.

It. Is. So. Good.

Goldie Hawn’s outfits are amazing. And she really did inspire leading ladies to come.

Here she is setting the stage for Lady Gaga circa “The Fame”:

She is inspiring Courtney Love and Kat Bjelland’s kinderwhore look right here:

But my absolute favorite is this look, which Ben and I call “sexy Michelle Tanner”:

All right, babies.
Since I am not perishing in the storm this weekend, I will write back on Monday and let you know how things are.

Much love,
craig

PS
I think we’re actually having a Sandra Bernhard “I’m Still Here… Damn It!” viewing party during the storm. It will be very fun and inspiring, just like Sandy B.

PPS
I heard they’re remaking “Overboard” with Jennifer Lopez. I am crushed. Absolutely devastated. I hope the film is never made.

I have this feeling right now that is close to the nostalgia I woke up with on Monday. But this is more of a longing for family and loved ones.

I was talking with my mother on the phone this morning, and in her calm yet frenetic manner of speaking, she talked about how she misses me and wants me to be happy and how she’s proud of me and etc.  You know, Mom talk. But it was a comforting discussion.

I needed it.

Being in NYC, far away from family and Texas, can be very exciting but also very lonely. My roots aren’t here. I often have days where I ask myself, “What the fuck am I doing?” (New York is a great place to live, but it is also one that is very indifferent about you. It will go on no matter what.)

I have always been a homebody. I love to be at home, and I love to be near people I care about. I also like to be comfortable. (Comfort is a main part of our design with Take Off Your Clothes. And even my knit bondage series is about comfort. And having more power, but that’s a different topic…)

So, I’ve put together a plan.

Should they (whoever “they” are) give me the power to restructure the United States, I’d make only light changes.

The first being this, combining New York and Texas:

It’s a good start.
But this would make it even better, moving Portland, OR to Texas:

That would be beautiful.
In a fantasy world.

One of my favorite Sonic Youth lyrics is from the song “Tom Violence”. In it Thurston sings “I left home for experience.”

So, whenever I am a little down because I miss my family and faraway friends, I think of this song and remember why I’m here and why I do what I do.

In lieu of being productive this morning when the coffee kicked in, I made a playlist using only songs that are named after girls.

Single names only.
So, Concrete Blonde’s “Caroline” makes the cut, but Sonic Youth’s “Karen Koltrane” does not.

Here are 5 tracks from the list I made:

“Caroline” by Concrete Blonde

“Lorelei” by Tom Tom Club

“Chistelle” by ESG

“Reena” by Sonic Youth

“Mona” by Quicksilver Messenger Service

Yes, it’s a nice day out, but it’s also cold.
So, I feel somewhat justified in my time spent.

I spent most of the evening listening to the same song over and over and drawing men with large penises.

I, too, like to play the piano this way:

Last night David B. and I went to a film screening at the MoMA of the filmmaker Cameron Jamie’s work, which was really cool.

Almost surreal, but actually very real documentations of real life. And every piece was set to these really noisy/sludgy Melvins tracks, except the first piece which was set to the Sonic Youth track “Massage the History”.

It was about these kids dancing very sexually in their living room. They were very into it and seemed not to be present anymore. But I guess that happens when you get lost in dance.

Anyway, when we sat down in the auditorium, I quickly recognized who was sitting in front of us: my personal favorites Kim Gordon and Thurston Moore.

I immediately texted my sister to tell her, but she didn’t believe me. So, after some coaxing, she got me to take a photo to prove it… (Oh, who am I kidding? There was very little coaxing involved.)

(Objects in the photo were a lot closer than they appeared.)

It’s a really bad photo, but you can see the back of their heads—backs of their heads?—to the right of the photograph. They’re sitting with Cameron Jamie, who is to their right.

Good films.
Hard to watch at times, but I enjoyed it.

Another film I very recently watched that was weird but enjoyable was “The Elephant Man”.

It was interesting.
I liked the mask Mr. Merrick would wear when he was trying to hide his face.

However, I think this is one of those films that comes off as being better than it actually is. It’s nice visually, but I questioned the storyline at times.

Also, though I love David Lynch, the David Lynch-esque elements didn’t work in such a straightforward film.

Just my two cents.
On to start the day!
Be good.

Sonic Youth played on David Letterman the other night:

I think it was a pretty good performance. And I'm digging the song. And the new album.

Have been on a (an?) SY kick for the past four or five days since I downloaded the new album. New SY songs make me happy because they're my favorite band. =)

I went to Salvation Army on Wednesday because the clothes were 50% off.

Like I always do first, I was looking through the white t-shirt section when I found this:

Awesome, right?

Look at the back:

Not awesome, right?

Since I was already photographing my outfit, I decided to put back on my sweater and take a photo for Wardrobe Remix:

I try not to look at that Flickr group very much because I when I do I feel like what I'm wearing isn't cool enough.

Astoria Bagels (Bagel?) puts TOO MUCH cream cheese on their bagels.

Just look at this big chunk of cream cheese that fell out of my everything bagel:

Here's my bagel face:

Gross.

Today I was walking to the grocery store to go buy some stuff for lunch and I saw a mother and her ducklings in the water looking for food to eat. At first I thought it was really cute because I'd never really seen a mother and her ducklings together like that except for things like the zoo or in photos…

But then as I was shooting the photos I realized that the ducks were swimming in trash and cigarette butts and stuff. So sad—especially because I have a sore spot for cute things like that. But this scene just sorta brings you back to reality.

The reality being that New York is a polluted place, I guess.

This last photo is kinda cute, though:

The trash isn't as noticeable.

Anyway, it was a really nice day today.
Ben J., Sarah C. (I call her Crompy), and I went outside to eat lunch and look at the sparrows and sea gulls and geese and pigeons—well, not so much the pigeons, I don't like them. (Ben and Crompy both worked for me today. Crompy and I worked on a wholesale order, and Ben worked on cleaning up my workspace. He's good at that; I'm not. I also worked on some custom orders.)

It's been a good day.

I still have a meeting to go to this evening; those always put me in a bad mood…

We shall see!

ALSO, last night Ben and I went to the World Financial Center to pick up our tickets for the free SonicYouth/TheFeelies concert in Battery Park. (You had to make reservations for these tickets on June 12th. You get two of them.) We got there and thought it'd be really simple, but there was this LONG line… He hadn't eaten and was feeling sick already—and has sore and aching, too—so he had to leave after awhile.

That really bummed out because I wanted Meredith S. and he to go with Lillian G. and me to the show.

But when I got to the front of the line, I thought I'd just TRY and see if I could get his tickets, too, since he had to leave. And I ended up getting them!

I just had to prove I was friend. (That involved giving his last name, email address, and phone number.)

So, yeah…
next Friday (July 4th) we'll all be seeing Sonic Youth and the Feelies (a rare performance apparently).
